This comedy chronicles the glorious efforts of General Aladeen, dictator of the Republic of Wadiya, to oppress his people and fight democracy. A Western journalist (Mel Smith) travels to Wadiya to find that not everything is as it seems, and soon finds himself a prisoner of Aladeen's regime.

The dictator becomes convinced that the Americans are trying to destroy his country by giving him bad advice on how to run his dictatorship, so he turns for help from an unlikely source: a British-American spy (Steve Coogan) who has recently been released from prison. The two must work together in order to stop the revolution, but they do so while forming an unlikely alliance with mischievous young princesses (Anna Faris and Maya Rudolph).
